Q&A with Port Phillip Mayor

Watch now
Mayor Cr Pearl discusses a range of St Kilda topics
Childcare: collaboration with centres & Council
Palais forecourt project commences @ 6 min
St Kilda Film Festival format @ 6.50 min
Vineyard redevelopment @ 8 min
St Kilda Library upgrade @ 9.30 min
Cowderoy traffic @ 10.40 min
Childcare: Now nine options being considered
Mayor Cr Pearl has said that there are now nine options being considered for the childcare centres that were previously being targeted for sale. But in an interesting and tricky twist, he said that the Victorian School Building Authority (the body that overseas education construction) had mandated that the discussions about funding must be confidential.
This effectively continues the ‘lock-out’ of parents from the detail of the negotiations about the future of their centres.
Pictured: Local MPs including Josh Burns and James Newbury joined councillors to receive childcare petition at the town hall last week.
Palais forecourt upgrade contract awarded and will be finished this year
Council approved the contract for a $4.5M upgrade to the Palais forecourt with works about to start and finish before Christmas.
More details
“Not progressing” with upgrade to The Vineyard
Plans to upgrade The Vineyard are “not progressing” according to Mayor Pearl.
The project was first mooted in 2019 with community consultation on the design.
The project included an upgrade from the disgusting Exeloo public toilets located next door.
Original information
Library upgrade “needs to be rescheduled”
The Mayor also indicated that the planned major upgrade of the St Kilda library needs to be ‘rescheduled’ and that council officers are drawing up options.
Lovers of the Library will be watching this space.
Shithouse location for Fitzroy Street public toilet?
After a decade or more of procrastination and indecision, last Friday signage went up on the proposed site of a new public toilet on Fitzroy Street.
The signage says the works are scheduled for April – July this year.
And the location …. the park side of Fitzroy Street not far from St Kilda Park Primary and the St Kilda Bowls Club.
What do you think about this location?
Next week we’ll look at how and why this location was chosen.
Our $12M view. Cost of storm water drain upgrade revealed.
The State Government has revealed that the new 60-metre-long viewing platform and upgrade to the Shakespeare Grove Main Drain cost $12M.

Local socials campaign watch

Burns backs anti-hoon action
“Seven out of nine Port Phillip Councillors voted for measures that will reduce dangerous hooning on our streets.
“The Council took a step towards introducing a hooning by-law and also the purchase of a mobile CCTV trailer to deter dangerous driving.
“This is a huge step in the right direction.
“Despite the two Greens Councillors not voting for these sensible measures to protect locals from dangerous hooning, I will continue to work constructively with all Councillors to develop these safety measures,” he wrote on Instagram
Hodgins-May backs EVs
“Australia wants and needs a pro-electric car policy and plan. It’s possible, it’s cheaper, it creates a huge amount of green jobs and it will drive down pollution.
“That’s why the Greens will invest to:
Help you buy your first EV
Help build the Australian EV manufacturing industry
Legislate tough vehicle pollution standards to drive down emissions
Build a $2 billion publicly owned EV fast charging network – including fast charging stations in Macnamara
Electrify the Commonwealth fleet.
“If you support electric vehicle transit, vote Green this election,” she wrote on Instagram.
Harkin says small business will be better off
“Small businesses in Macnamara have done it tough through the pandemic.
“That’s why our Liberal Government is backing small businesses with asset write-offs to reduce financial pressure as they recover post-pandemic,” said Collen Harkin on Facebook.

Macnamara in the media

Greens narrow local hopes to Macnamara: The Age
The Age’s David Crow has reported that Green aspirations have narrowed but still include Macnamara. Last week he reported that:
“Bandt and the Greens used to name nine target seats in the lower house in the inflated hope they could mess with both major parties and seize the balance of power or even form a minority government with Labor.
“Interviewed for this publication on Wednesday, Bandt said the focus was on three Labor seats – Griffith, Macnamara and Richmond – and two Liberal seats, Ryan and Brisbane.”
