St Kilda Festival 2022 to go ahead @ Council
Saturday 5 February to Sunday 13 February 2022
Prompted by uncertainty about large scale events, Council voted to plan for a modified St Kilda Festival across nine days in February next year.
The Festival period would also include two separately managed local events; the Pride March (Sunday 6 February) and Yaluk-ut Weelam Ngargee Indigenous event (Saturday 12 February).
While details are yet to be finalised, the modified Festival will spread programming across a variety of locations over the nine days.
A report to Council envisaged an opening day in the Acland Street area, followed by midweek programming on South Beach Reserve and a closing day on Fitzroy Street and surrounds, including the Esplanade Market.

Council divided on the St Kilda Festival

The decision to continue with the Festival was not unanimous, with Councillors Heather Cunsolo, Rhonda Clark and Christina Sirakoff opposing the decision.
Cr Andrew Bond, moving the motion to go ahead, said the Festival was an important first step back to hosting events.
Cr Pearl, emphasising that he was a proud fiscal conservative, also supported the green light saying the economic benefits were ‘unrivalled’. Mayor Louise Crawford was moved to tears about the importance of the festival to the community. “This is an investment in a community that’s on its knees,” she said.
Opposing Councillors focused on the financial risk and the COVID uncertainly increasing the chance of cancellation at great expense. Cr Cunsolo said hope should not transcend responsibility. Cr Sirakoff said it was hard to see how such a large festival could be COVID safe. “Ít’s just too soon,” she said. Likewise Cr Clark said no amount of hope changes the risk.

Unanimous support for soap @ public toilets
Who knew that Council in 2015 decided to remove soap dispensers from public toilets because of vandalism? Sad but true.
Prompted by Cr Cunsolo, council officers are now preparing a plan to reintroduce soap dispensers prior to this summer for consideration. We’ll report on the outcome as it come to light.
Lease of council carpark as development site @ Jackson Street
“For lease adjacent to the Pride Centre, 1000 m2 ground lease suitable for a range of uses with up to a 50-year period, must retain 39 public carparking spaces. Application by public tender.”
Well not just yet. Council resolved to start the process of taking this “development opportunity” to the market.
In proposing this, officers said Council’s intervention would also send a confidence boosting signal to the market that change is encouraged.

What’s next for Acland Plaza?

Last week TWiSK invited all Lake Ward councillors (Andrew Bond, Christina Sirakoff and Katherine Copsey) to offer their ideas on Acland Plaza.
So far only Cr Copsey has responded.
She has requested that we make it clear that the opinions are hers and not the official position of Council.

Acland Plaza is a canvas for our community’s creativity
