Aidan’s farewell to St Kilda concert @ St Kilda
Sunday 8 August, 7.30 pm
A very special event for Aidan McGartland, a local musicologist and opera singer.
Aidan has been accepted to pursue his music studies at the prestigious University of Oxford.
The concerts starts in the style of a 19th century salon concert, featuring art songs by Fauré, Schubert and others.
The second half is a new music recital of works by 20th century English modernist composer, Elisabeth Lutyens.

Keegan Palmer aged 9 with Cr Serge ThomannWe remember a 9-year-old Keegan in St Kilda
Cast your mind back to 2013: After 10 years mired in controversy, the St Kilda Skatepark was finally set to open.
Searching for a dynamic skateboarder to grace the launch, Cr Thomann (pictured above with Keegan) reached out to a Queensland based 9-year-old skateboard wizard and  booked him to ‘christen’ the bowl in youthful style.
Little did we know that the young wiz would go on to be Tokyo Gold Medalist Keegan Palmer.
Both skateboarding and Keegan have come a long way in just 9 years.
Bravo to Keegan and to all the other skaters who dare to have a go at the skatepark.
PS We still don’t comprehend how Keegan can do the gravity defying “kickflip body varial 540”, but we’re sure some young skaters are now giving it ago at the park!
Here’s a few seconds of video featuring 12 year old Keegan at St Kilda Skatepark in 2016.

From St Kilda boardwalk to an amazing finish on the Tokyo Track
Finishing 7th, Stewart McSweyn achieved Australia’s best result in a men’s Olympic 1500m final since the legendary Herb Elliott clinched gold in Rome in 1960.
Stewart lived in St Kilda and trained along the foreshore and around Albert Park Lake during 2014-2015 while staying with his Uncle Rob in Eildon Road.
For the record, McSweyn’s brilliant Tokyo time of 3:31.91 would have won gold in every other 1500m final in Olympic history, which dates back to the Athens Games of 1896.

Trouble brewing over Triangle summer
Council has given ‘provisional’ approval to Live Nation (operators of the Palais) for summer music festivals on the Triangle carpark across February-March and November-December next year.
Branded as The Palace Foreshore, the activation will be similar to the April Sun program from earlier this year.
The first dates are likely to be 7 February to 19 March, with ten events held across the weekends during that period.
There could also be a second season in November December 2022.
Devil is the parking detail
The provisional approval requires “the event permit holder to work closely with Council Officers between now and the event to ensure that any negative impact to local traders is mitigated as much as is possible.”
TWiSK understands that a range of local traders are ‘distressed’ about the impact of reduced parking on their trade in these key periods.
The Triangle carpark has 316 car park spaces. Under the provisional plan, during February/March, there would be 13 days where the car park will have 19 car parks available for public use and 28 days that will have 149 car parks free for public use.
The numbers are interesting
Live Nation’s proposal tells us that the capacity of the temporary venue can be up to 6500 standing or 2400 seated. They also present data about $$ benefits to the local economy.
Council $$ are interesting too. They propose a site fee of $67,100 for the first season, forgoing around $58,000 is parking revenue.

Special access for some?
Does management of the Palais give Live Nation ‘special’ access to the carpark?
TWiSK loves live music and the Palais, but we wonder if other promoters have equal access to the carpark for activations? We’ll put this question to Council and publish their reply.

Accessibility Action Plan
Please help Council create a more accessible and inclusive Port Phillip.
If you’re a person with disability, including a mental illness, or care for someone with disability, they want to hear your suggestions.

TWiSK editorial

Writing this TWiSK is fully aware that Lockdown 6 has been extended.
This gives us a heavy heart.
A number of the events listed have already been rescheduled – and that must be so emotionally challenging, let alone financially apocalyptic.
All TWiSK can do is be ready to support local music, arts and community with gusto when we can.
We hope that you will do likewise.
