Reclink finals footy @ Peanut Farm

The Reclink Grand Final Series will be played across three days, and everyone is welcome. Each day there’ll be a free BBQ lunch, coffee, live music, giveaways through the Reclink Sports Share program.
Doug Hawkins, Simon Madden, Terry Daniher and David Rhys-Jones will be in attendance, as will football media personalities such as Smokie Dawson and Anthony Hudson.
Reclink Football was born on the streets of St. Kilda in 1990. players now come from teams across the regions such as Ballarat and Bendigo, as well as from Rosebud, Casey, Frankston right over to the western suburbs. It’s a load of fun and footy.

BLX Book launch: “Through the lens of Dion Hirini” @ Memo

Dion Hirini, NZ born musician and Melbourne resident, died suddenly in March this year. Best known for work with Paul Kelly, he was described by Vika and Linda Bull as the ‘third Bull sister.’ BLX is the first published release of a collection of photographs documenting the life and travels of this much loved musician and passionate photographer.

Amber light for bike paths @ Council
Major changes will be made to recently installed pop-up bike ‘paths’ after Council raised serious concerns with the Department of Transport (DoT).
Some lanes will be removed and others re-evaluated with more consultation with Council and community.
Council petitioned the DoT for changes after community unrest about the roll-out, especially from Albert Park and Port Melbourne. The works were also the subject of bitter and, at times personal, debate in Council meetings.
Pop-up looked like a stuff up from the get-go
Starting with a strident community response to bike lanes on Kerferd Road, the widespread pop-up bike infrastructure was always going to be controversial.
Widely slammed as confusing and hard to understand, the pop-ups looked far from temporary or trial with abundant bollards, concrete partitions and litres of yellow paint on roads. The consultation process seemed to baffle even those in the know.
A senior insider told TWiSK that he regretted not asking more questions. ‘It was easy to agree to safer bike paths – that’s easy to support – but that’s not we got,’ the insider said.
‘This has been a major setback for community support for bike paths, especially in an election year,’ the insider speculated.
Bike lobby says changes missed the main gain
The Port Phillip Bicycle Users Group (PPBUG) disagrees that the cause of safer cycling has been set back. They wanted the trial of bike lane infrastructure in Port Phillip continue, with a full evaluation at the end, but effectively damned the works with faint praise.
In July, Julie Clutterbuck, President PPBUG, said ‘the VicRoads trial has the potential to deliver modest safety improvements, so we should let the trial go ahead and evaluate it at the end. However, the program does not deliver what people on bikes really need: protected bike lanes.’
Speaking after the changes were announced, she pointed to Council’s own plan for a network of 14 proper protected bike lanes linking the community. She urged the Council to refocus on making their own plans a reality.
‘There’s a lot of quieter voices in the community that support things like the speed humps that slow down traffic and make it safer for everyone, but most of all we need protected bike lanes,’ she said.
Paradise postponed
And with virtually a hill-free municipality, you’d think Port Phillip had the potential to be a bike rider’s paradise – but that will take more than a splash of yellow paint on roads – watch this space.
Council will discuss the next steps on Wednesday.

Lauren Sherson is the local Liberal hopefulLocal Liberals have preselected a graduate of their young leaders’ program and former Federal candidate Lauren Sherson to be their hope for Albert Park.
Sherson was unable to speak directly with TWiSK as Party HQ had yet to brief on campaign procedures, but we hope to have more about her ideas next week.
Locals who know her told TWiSK she was active in local arts and a very keen candidate. And it’s not her first tilt at politics, she ran for the seat of Melbourne in Federal politics in 2019.
Former Bayside Mayor goes from Blue to Teal in Brighton
Felicity Frederico, former Bayside Mayor, has announced her run for Brighton as an independent candidate. A former Liberal Party member, she made an unsuccessful bid to gain Brighton prelection over incumbent Liberal MLA James Newbury last year and subsequently quit the Party earlier this year.
Brighton was a narrow win for Newbury in 2018, with less than 1000 votes separating Liberal and Labor in the final count.
The entry of Frederico alongside Port Phillip Cr Louise Crawford as Labor candidate pits two former Mayors against Newbury.
If the Greens were to select Port Phillip Deputy Mayor Cr Tim Baxter it would be see three former councillors/Mayors in the race. But we are only speculating not predicting!

Copsey launches bid for Southern Metro
Last week saw the launch of Catherine Copsey’s bid to win back an upper house seat for the Greens, the Southern Metro upper house seat held until 2018 by pioneering Greens MLC Sue Pennicuik.
At the launch, Greens leader Samantha Ratnam laid out their familiar campaign agenda, including climate action with no new coal and gas and a swift transition to renewables, better renting and more affordable housing plus restoration of integrity.
The Greens have now announced all their upper house candidates but only a handful of lower house hopefuls. Except for Prahran, with sitting MLA Sam Hibbins, candidates for the other local seals of Brighton, Caulfield and Albert Park have not yet been announced.
