Council finds $18m for childcare centres
State adds $12.6m

Council and the State Government have entered a 7 year $30.6m partnership to make six childcare centres fit for purpose with renovations or replacement.
The agreement ensures that six centres requiring significant renovation or replacement will be made fit-for-purpose and accessible for generations to come at the same locations:
• Eildon Road Childcare and Kindergarten, St Kilda
• The Avenue Children’s Centre and Kindergarten, Balaclava
• Elwood Children’s Centre
• North St Kilda Children’s Centre
• Clarendon Children’s Centre, South Melbourne
• Lilian Cannam Kindergarten, South Melbourne.
Works for the first three centres will be prioritised under the partnership.
Delight after a ‘long struggle’
Mayor Marcus Pearl is said to be delighted – and he’s not the only one.
In a joint statement, families and staff from Elwood Children’s Centre, Eildon Road Childcare & Kindergarten (St
Kilda) and The Avenue Children’s Centre & Kindergarten (Balaclava) welcomed the news with ‘delight after a long struggle’.
Eildon Road Childcare & Kindergarten Committee President Caroline Thornton said the Committees of the three centres have worked tirelessly during the past 11 months to stop the sale of their buildings.
“As key drivers of the funding partnership between the City of Port Phillip and the Victorian
Government, we are really pleased to welcome this announcement,” she said.
“The funding means our centres and three others in the municipality will be redeveloped or
renovated.”
Thanks for ‘unwavering support’
Elwood Children’s Centre Committee President Claire Byrne thanked the local community for its unwavering support.
“We also couldn’t have achieved this outcome without the strong support and encouragement from Martin Foley MP, Josh Burns MP and Nina Taylor MP and their dedicated teams who really helped us keep going when we felt that the challenge was too great.”

TWiSK comment – Will they play well together?
And now the work begins … Anyone involved in projects involving multiple levels of government and the community knows how easily they descend into acrimony and dissatisfaction.
The announced “partnership between council and state” is the first sign of concern, where are the centres in this partnership?
TWiSK believes it must be a three-way partnership with the centre committees as equal members in the sandpit.
The government partners need to resource the volunteer committees so they can play an equal role in the projects.
Consultation is not enough, it needs to be co-operation as equals.
