Pay now, FOGO later?

Questions were asked at Council about the new $88 FOGO charge that has appeared on some rate notices in advance of the service starting.
Council staff said they expected the service to start for about 18,000 households in the New Year – and that current rates notices must include all the year’s charges.
Rate Payers of Port Phillip (RoPP) President Campbell Spence told TWiSK it was reassuring the kerbside FOGO bins and collection services were on track to commence in January 2023.
“But if it costs $88 for 6 months when this is similar to what other councils charge for a full year. Does this mean that the FOGO charge will double for the first full FOGO bin service year, 2023-24?”
Music venue back in the frame as triangle argument gets circular
After more than two decades of talking about St Kilda’s best located but most ugly carpark, Council has resolved to spend an estimated at $378,000 (excluding internal resources required to support the project) to investigate the financial viability of attracting a music venue to the site.
Public submissions to Wednesday’s Council meeting from music venue supporters argued that there was a need for a Southside standing audience music venue with a 2000+ patrons capacity – reminiscent of the former Palace venue on the site.
However, former Deputy Mayor Serge Thomann, talking on behalf of unChain, expressed concerned that a music venue focus was too narrow, suggesting that it would cost $100m and there were already 20+ venues of that kind in Melbourne.
Test the market for music venue
After the decision was previously postponed pending more options, Cr Andrew Bond successfully moved a motion to crack on with the feasibility study to genuinely assess if a music venue was viable.
Cr Baxter, Copsey and Consulo spoke in support of an option that included more technical analysis and a broader scope.
Effectively, they wanted to wait for the “big fish to land.”
Tone of déjà vu
The absence of a breakthrough idea or bold vision for the site gave the Council discussion a flat, unenthusiastic tone.
Yes, there was a consensus that a car park was a poor use of the space, but there was also an evident lack of passion.
Palace and Palais de Danse: Same site, same fate
(Pictured above) While many will remember the Palace burning down in 2007, fewer can recall the Palais de Danse on the exact same site burning down in 1968. Visit Wikipedia for the history lesson
But the Triangle doesn’t need a history lesson, it needs big ideas that can command both community support and investment.
Back pedalling on bike paths
Question time at last week’s MTF Transport Forum was dominated by public comments on the recent bike infrastructure installed by the Department of Transport. The following day, Council voted to accept a extensive list of adjustments suggested by DoT in response to concerns. Read the motion in full
TWiSK is suspending election coverage while some candidates are observing a period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth.
