Port Phillip lax on vax?
Part 2

This Week in St Kilda #287

Is age or attitude driving lower local vax rates?

Local postcodes 3182, 3183 and 3184 are amongst the 27 suburban Melbourne postcodes with lowest first dose vaccination coverage according to the State Government. Source
This comes as concerns about clusters of vaccination resistance in inner-city areas were reported by The Age
Age rather than attitude
However, Port Phillip’s age demographics rather than ‘alternative ideas’ may go some way to explaining the lower rate of first vaccination.
The local proportion of people aged between 20 and 39 years is about 40% compared to 31% Melbourne wide – this age group was not eligible for vaccination until recently.
It’s timely then that Port Phillip Council is developing a social media campaign to promote vaccination – presumably amongst the under 40s..
In another shot-in-the-arm for vaccination rates, more local pharmacies are now offering Moderna bookings and Star Health is also giving vaccinations at the local Betty Day Centre (see hours and contact details below).
Will vaccination be required to enter council facilities?
How will this work for community groups and who will enforce it?
Just as retailers and hospitality are grappling with ways to regulate access for unvaccinated patrons, councils are also scrambling to establish access policies for facilities including libraries, town halls and community centres.
Last week the City of Melbourne announced that from early November vaccinations will be required to enter all City of Melbourne facilities, including libraries, recreation centres, community facilities, and administration offices including Town Hall. Source
Port Phillip vax policy in the pipeline
Locally, Port Phillip CEO Peter Smith told TWiSK that a vaccination policy and procedure is being developed as a matter of priority and once finalised will be communicated as soon as possible.
“The policy will give consideration to the safety of Council’s customers as well as staff,” he said.
On the question of staff vaccinations, Mr Smith said Council is currently working to ensure compliance with the latest Chief Health Officer directions to ensure all Authorised Workers are vaccinated as required.

The Grandmasters: #sh*tf*ckery’ @ A new book by Julie Shiels
M.33 – a local art publisher headed by Balaclava resident Helen Frajman – has announced the publication of ‘The Grandmasters: #sh*tf*ckery’ – a new book by Julie Shiels.
TWiSK readers will have seen the works in previous editions.
Clearly Julie Shiels has had loads of fun combining the old and the new, But she’s definitely got serious intent.
“By injecting satire and humour into contemporary issues, these images hopefully make it easier to stay vigilant. If we stop paying attention it will only get worse,” she warns.
