$200K for Carlisle pop-ups

Council will spend $200K over 12 months to fill vacant shopfronts with ‘new businesses, creativity and innovation.’
About 10% or about 15 prime shopfronts are currently vacant on the strip.

A swanky consultancy, The Place Agency, has been contracted by Council to ‘activate’ at least five vacant properties over 12 months and deliver a year-round calendar of events and promotional activities for Carlisle Street.
Pop-ups will pay a portion of the market value rent and any outgoings for the pop-up space.
A $10,000 grant will be provided to each participant to uplift their space or help cover outgoing costs.
Get involved hello@theplaceagency.com or 1300 308 818.

Kindergarten marks centenary
South Melbourne’s Lilian Cannam Kindergarten celebrated 100 years with a community celebration on Saturday.
Founded in 1922, it’s one of the oldest kindergartens in Victoria, originally established as a free local kinder by local resident Lilian Cannam.
The kindergarten marked the milestone with a festival and open day. Generations of past and current students, families, and teachers were joined by outgoing local MP Martin Foley and Council representatives who confirmed a $3.9 million of investment by the Victorian Government and City of Port Phillip in the centre’s future. The celebration included a concert by students of the 3-year-old and 4-year-old kinder program.

Upper house race: The battle for seat #5

Greens quest to regain seat from field of minor parties
St Kilda sits in the Victorian Legislative Council region of Southern Metropolitan.
Our votes will contribute to electing five members to the 40-member upper house. Until the last election, Southern Metro was usually represented by two Labor, two Liberal and one Greens MLC.
But the 2018 vote was a bitter disappointment for the Greens, seeing three times elected Sue Pennicuik falling short even though she polled nearly 13%.
5th seat went to Clifford Hayes, former Bayside Mayor
The 5th spot was snatched by Clifford Hayes for the Sustainable Australia Party despite only receiving 1.26% of the vote.
Such are the vagaries of the upper house preference system with preferences from many minor parties ending up with Hayes.
Familiar faces re-contesting, while others play musical chairs
Prominent Liberals David Davis and Georgie Crozier (pictured) are re-contesting, as is Clifford Hayes for the Sustainable Australia Party.
Meanwhile Labor is playing musical chairs, with both current members seeking to swap seats. Nina Taylor MLC is making a bid for the lower house in Albert Park to replace retiring Martin Foley, while Enver Erdogan MLC is seeking to swap to Northern Metropolitan.
The two new Labor candidates are direct from the typical Labor play book: John Berger, former TWU Victorian Branch Secretary; and Ryan Batchelor, executive director of the McKell Institute and son of former state MP Peter Batchelor.
Copsey seeks to reclaim seat for Greens
The Greens candidate is current Port Phillip Councillor Katherine Copsey, a lawyer and employed advocate for gambling reform. Buoyed by good results for the Greens in the Federal Senate, Copsey’s success will depend on the strength of local campaigns in the 11 lower house seats that make up the Region.
Expect some preference ‘farmers’ amongst the earnest candidates
In 2018, fifteen minor parties fielded candidates in Southern Region (% are their 2018 vote), including Victorian Socialists (0.45%), Australian Liberty Alliance (0.48%), Health Australia Party (0.45%), Aussie Battler Party (0.39%), Voluntary Euthanasia Party (0.995), Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Vic (0.62%), Hudson 4 NV (0.08%), Labour DLP (1.03%), Sustainable Australia (1.26%), Fiona Patten’s Reason Party (1.94%), Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (1.41%), Animal Justice Party (2.09%), Liberal Democrats (1.37%), Transport Matters (0.31%) and Australian Country Party (0.16%).
The top three votes were: Liberal (37%), Labor (33.39% ) and Greens (12.85% )
The full list of 2022 candidates will not be available until just days before pre-poll voting starts, but we do know the following minor party candidates:
Animal Justice Party
Ben Schultz
(Pictured left)
Reason Party
Andrew Johnson
