RMYS sails into controversy
Redevelopment plans for the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron building near St Kilda Pier have sailed into a storm of controversy.
Local architect and former councillor, David Brand told TWiSK that RMYS HQ is one of our City’s most prominent heritage buildings.
“Yet some of the most basic principles of heritage conservation seem to have been forgotten,” he said.
RMYS confident of their course
Meanwhile the RMYS is adamant that their plans for a $5m refit are right for the club, the amenity and the heritage values.
RMYS General Manager Matt Solly told TWiSK that the plans were a much needed update to a 95 year old building.
“We’re trying to create a family friendly space, with better access and more modern facilities,” he said.
In their application, the RMYS said a refresh for this iconic St Kilda building was long overdue. The Club have used the opportunity to explore how the internal layout could better suit their operations.
The Club wants to expand its membership to a more family-orientated demographic.
“This is a Yacht Club not a night club,” he said.
Club urged to pause and rethink
But David Brand says the Club doesn’t need to lose the character of their building to modernise and increase accessibility.
“The applicants seem to have little idea of what’s charming, important or valuable about its own building. It’s architectural character and its cultural identity are in real danger of being jettisoned.
“Either Council needs to apply the heritage protections more forcefully or the Club needs to save itself by withdrawing the proposal and redesigning it,” he concluded

Felicity Frederico OAM
Independent for Brighton
As supplied by the candidate
Who: I am a proud mum, lifetime Bayside resident, former Mayor and businesswomen with over 20 years of volunteering, actively listening and acting in our community. This was recognised with an Order of Australia medal in 2019.
Why: I am standing because the Brighton electorate deserves better. Many in our community have said the major political parties have taken us for granted and have lost our trust and respect. We have been starved of an effective voice, representation and advocacy.
Why me: I have a proven track record around advocacy and delivering on key issues. In collaboration with the community I make sure we speak in one loud voice on the issues that matter to us: integrity, climate and equality
Why here: I have a lifetime connection in the Brighton Electorate, including living in Elwood for eight years. We are an electorate with a heart and a conscious and we embrace diversity.

No Greens to be seen – almost
With less than 70 days to the election, Prahran MLA Sam Hibbins is the only Greens lower house candidate declared for the whole Southern Metropolitan Region.
That means no Greens candidate has started to campaign in the following seats: Albert Park, Bentleigh, Brighton, Burwood, Caulfield, Hawthorn, Kew, Malvern, Oakleigh and Sandringham.
Local Councillor Catherine Copsey is the Greens upper house candidate.
Her chances of election would be boosted significantly by strong local campaigns in all the Southern Region seats.
TWiSK has repeatedly asked senior Greens for a timeline for candidate announcements without any success.
