Shakespeare Grove drain upgrade won’t change quality of stormwater entering the bay
The new truncated pier on top of the stormwater drain opposite Shakespeare Grove was opened with a low key event on Saturday.
And while its not the Brookes Jetty of old, there’s a lot to like about it.
And on a sunny Saturday morning, with no wind and clear waters, it was a great place to pause and enjoy the horizon.
TWiSK even saw a graceful ray slide by.
Hear Mal Webb’s Brooke’s Jetty ditty
A highlight of the pier opening was an enthusiastic rendition of The Brookes Jetty Song by local songster Mal Web.
And so it goes ..
“Oh, Brooke’s Jetty, bayside lovers held you dear
Singing your sweet counterpoint to St Kilda pier
But 2015 sang a sad refrain
With your demolition leaving just the Shakespeare drain
Such parting sorrow, pleading to explain
It got us down, but hey, let’s not wear a frown
‘Cos this perky new projection
Called the Circle of Reflection
Is a nice result all round
Our voices will resound
As a tribute to the joy you brought to St Kilda town”

Drain pain as litter runs free
But it remains a drain and TWiSK wondered if the renovation included any features to improve the quality of the outfall entering the bay.
So TWiSK asked Melbourne Water to outline the efforts to capture pollution before it enters the bay.
Terry Sefton, Melbourne Water spokesperson. replied saying:
“While the works won’t change the quality of the stormwater coming out of the drain, they will continue to minimise flooding in the area by carrying stormwater away from residential areas. Litter reductions and water quality improvements are best achieved at the upstream source of the pollution. For example, Council’s litter traps in Acland and Carlisle Streets and Water Sensitive Urban Designs (WSUD) with roadside garden beds play an important role in filtering stormwater pollutants before they enter the Bay.”
We also contacted Council who was at pains to list their significant efforts to reduce litter from upstream through increased WSUD.
Council also confirmed that Melbourne Water did investigate including litter traps in the drain renewal but decided they couldn’t be installed as, when full, they would be too large and could get blocked during heavy rain.
Meanwhile, the EPA identifies stormwater outfalls as a major source of pollution and hazards for swimmers.
During summer months the EPA monitor pollution levels at St Kilda and publish the results of their website.

What shall we call the little pier?
Colloquial names have been flowing in to TWiSK. “Shorty”, “The Stub”, ‘Stuby”, “Stubsy” and the very naughty “The Amputee”.
It’s also been noted that at night it looks like a ‘glow worm’ reaching out into the bay.
