Recycling audit finds many of us are rubbish at recycling
The latest Council audit of home recycling bins has found that up to 25% of the contents doesn’t belong in yellow bins. Contamination can result in the contents going to landfill instead of recycling – double yikes.
The most common recycling NO NOs are food or garden waste, Styrofoam, e-waste and the dreaded plastic bags (often used to carry the recycling to the bin).
Yellow bins are ONLY for empty plastic containers and bottles (numbered 1 to 5), glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminium cans, plus paper and cardboard.

New 35 year lease? @ St Kilda Marina

Built on reclaimed land in the 1960’s. the first 50 year lease on the St Kilda Marina expired last year. After an extended, delayed and ‘challenging’ process, the Council has selected a preferred leaseholder and plan for the area.
As with all these things, it is hard for the public to follow – in part because we aren’t privy to the alternative proposals, but also because it has been a relatively low-profile process.
A decision on a site of this importance certainly deserves some scrutiny – which we will provide in coming weeks.
Here are some fast facts
# It’s a big area with prime bay frontage
The marina includes a range of wet and dry berths, recreation activities including Sky Dive Melbourne and hospitality venues including Riva St Kilda, The Great Provider and Rollo’s Kiosk. Also a service station and extensive car parking.
# It’s crown land, managed by Council ….
But the final say is with the State Government
# It’s been unloved, ugly and at times notorious
It looks like it was built in the 60’s because it was. It’s got a factory/junk yard rather than foreshore look. The carpark is notorious for drug deals, hook-ups, burnouts and all matter of nefarious doings.
# It’s good on paper but …..
There’s an understandable romance about foreshore in St Kilda.
But the reality can harsh.
Cooler months are hard for foreshore businesses.
And let’s be honest, it can be windy and exposed.
# The community reference group was “challenging”
Presumably challenging was a euphemism for bitter division and acrimony – we’d love to know more.
# It’s a big deal
In the order of $160 million over 35 years.

‘Independent’ trio to stand @ Council elections
TWiSK can confirm that three members of the Liberal Party will be standing as independents in the Council elections.
Current councillor Andrew Bond emailed TWiSK with the following carefully worded information:
“There are three Independent candidates running for election. Marcus Pearl in Gateway Ward, Jo McDonald in Canal Ward and Andrew Bond in Lake Ward.
“All three – although members of the Liberal Party – will be running as independents, and if successful will bring to Council the commercial acumen required to navigate Council through the current financial crisis but with a unique, strong, and determined focus on local issues that is missing in many of the current Councillors.“
Who is candidate Jo McDonald?

Jo has lived in St Kilda for about two decades.
Professionally, she is a full-time management consultant, working long term contract roles.
Jo loves to walk Dusty, her labradoodle named after the singer (not the footballer), in Alma Park.
She’s also got a couple of cats at home (and a husband).
And yes, a member of the Liberal Party but standing as an independent.
