Upper house race: The battle for seat #5

Greens quest to regain seat from field of minor parties
St Kilda sits in the Victorian Legislative Council region of Southern Metropolitan.
Our votes will contribute to electing five members to the 40-member upper house. Until the last election, Southern Metro was usually represented by two Labor, two Liberal and one Greens MLC.
But the 2018 vote was a bitter disappointment for the Greens, seeing three times elected Sue Pennicuik falling short even though she polled nearly 13%.
5th seat went to Clifford Hayes, former Bayside Mayor
The 5th spot was snatched by Clifford Hayes for the Sustainable Australia Party despite only receiving 1.26% of the vote.
Such are the vagaries of the upper house preference system with preferences from many minor parties ending up with Hayes.
Familiar faces re-contesting, while others play musical chairs
Prominent Liberals David Davis and Georgie Crozier (pictured) are re-contesting, as is Clifford Hayes for the Sustainable Australia Party.
Meanwhile Labor is playing musical chairs, with both current members seeking to swap seats. Nina Taylor MLC is making a bid for the lower house in Albert Park to replace retiring Martin Foley, while Enver Erdogan MLC is seeking to swap to Northern Metropolitan.
The two new Labor candidates are direct from the typical Labor play book: John Berger, former TWU Victorian Branch Secretary; and Ryan Batchelor, executive director of the McKell Institute and son of former state MP Peter Batchelor.
Copsey seeks to reclaim seat for Greens
The Greens candidate is current Port Phillip Councillor Katherine Copsey, a lawyer and employed advocate for gambling reform. Buoyed by good results for the Greens in the Federal Senate, Copsey’s success will depend on the strength of local campaigns in the 11 lower house seats that make up the Region.
Expect some preference ‘farmers’ amongst the earnest candidates
In 2018, fifteen minor parties fielded candidates in Southern Region (% are their 2018 vote), including Victorian Socialists (0.45%), Australian Liberty Alliance (0.48%), Health Australia Party (0.45%), Aussie Battler Party (0.39%), Voluntary Euthanasia Party (0.995), Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Vic (0.62%), Hudson 4 NV (0.08%), Labour DLP (1.03%), Sustainable Australia (1.26%), Fiona Patten’s Reason Party (1.94%), Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (1.41%), Animal Justice Party (2.09%), Liberal Democrats (1.37%), Transport Matters (0.31%) and Australian Country Party (0.16%).
The top three votes were: Liberal (37%), Labor (33.39% ) and Greens (12.85% )
Preference farmers weave their spell
The dark art of preference farming is alive and well.
The signal that farming is happening is the number of preference before the first major party appears on the list.
The preference farmers have been organised to swap preferences amongst themselves before it goes to a major.

Candidates in their own words
In ballot order
With Group Voting preferences

Beware.

Be informed.
Be selective about where your votes goes
There are TWO ways to make your vote count

Method 1
“Above the line” – Check where your vote will go
You can vote for your party of choice ‘above the line’ by placing the number ‘1’ in the square above the party name. Your vote will be treated as though it has the full list of preferences as lodged by your chosen party on its Group Voting Ticket (GVT). Some of the minor parties have done deals to share votes around – their preferences are listed below.
Method 2
Choose your own preferences – at least the first five

You can give your own preferences for candidates below the line. You must mark at least five preferences from 1 to 5. Less than five and your vote is informal. You can go beyond five, and the more preferences you give, the more likely it is that your vote will continue to stay live all the way through the count.

All candidates were invited to submit 30 word answers to 5 basic questions

BRADBURY, Chris

WHO I AM?
I’m the One Nation Candidate for the Legislative Council for Southern Metro. I am happily employed as an Air Transport Captain, but I hear a call to higher duty, to serve the people of this great nation.
WHY ?
There is a disturbing trend toward totalitarianism in Victoria. I offer my service to ensure this immorality is stopped in its tracks. After all, opportunity abounds where responsibility is ignored.
WHY ME?
Without being overtly religious, I believe in the moral principals that founded our Parliamentary system. If elected I will uphold these principles in service to you the people.
WHY HERE ?
I love All of Melbourne, and Southern Metro needs a broader political menu. Its business community would benefit from One Nations policies immensely, take a look for yourself, I did.

Andrew Johnson
Reason candidate for Southern Metro

In his own words
Who am I?
Andrew Johnson is the Reason candidate for Southern Metro in the upper house. He is a swim teacher, writer, actor, and policy nerd with a minor obsession for integrity.
Why?
A lifetime of feeling like my representatives weren’t one bit interested in what mattered to me and my community. Seeing how much good could be done if only politicians chose to serve constituents rather than their donors.
Why me?
Like all Reason candidates I am committed to evidence and compassion framing all policy. I will fight for real integrity in government to restore faithful service from our representatives to the community.
Why here?
I have lived all my life in this electorate. I went to school and uni here. My career in swim teaching has been here amongst the families that have grown alongside it.

I’m a long-time and passionate resident of Melbourne’s Southern Metropolitan region, an advocate for environmental, social and economic justice and a Port Phillip Greens councillor since 2016.

Why me?
As a local councillor I know our community well. The Greens will hold the government to account and push for better outcomes on climate, housing and integrity.
Why here?
