TWISK REVIEW: It’s been ten years since the Djuki dancers from Arnhem Land went viral on YouTube with Zorba the Greek meets traditional Yolngu dance. With plenty of traditional dance moves combined with hip grinding that would impress Elvis, the dancers are at MAP57 until 28 July with a dynamic one-hour show. Video clips of elders put the dance in cultural context and explain the birth of their desire to take their dance to the world. The dancers radiate enthusiasm, humour and cheek. From Zorba through Singing in the Rain to Michael Jackson, the boys dance the way that they like. It’s unique, it’s fun and it’s inspiring. You’ll witness why it went viral a decade ago.

TWISK checks the facts about Tram 96
Did you receive this postcard from Southern Metro MLC Margaret Fitzherbert last week? Yikes, trams cut in peak hour? How many and why? The postcard was short on specifics, so we chased the details.
According to Yarra Trams, 791 Route 96 trams now depart Acland Street each week – exactly the same number as last year. But as Margaret correctly points out, there is one fewer service during morning peak, but there is also one additional service during the afternoon peak. Meaning the number of services hasn’t actually changed.
However this picture of a packed St Kilda bound 96 tram outside Southern Cross last week shows that over crowding is still a concern.
The public are voting with their Myki’s for public transport by using services like the 96. But with persistent overcrowding, more trams, especially in peak times would be welcome.
Here’s Margaret’s email – drop her a line with your ideas about the 96, and maybe the 12 and 16 while you’re at it. I’d love to know when low-floor trams will run on 12 and when the long-promised Balaclava station tram stop will be upgraded for disabled access.
