You Got Older is many things: a gentle comedy about cancer; a young woman’s coming of age tale laced with vivid sexual fantasies; a family plays homage to a dying dad. But is it an uplifting night at the theatre?
Well packed by Director Brett Cousins, You Got Older is indeed a gentle comedy – and I found it surprisingly uplifting. Pulled along by a mighty performance by Emily Goddard playing Mae, a twenty something between jobs and between relationships, called home to be with a possibly dying dad played with charm and restraint by Francis Greenslade.
Dream sequences of Mae’s fantasy life and the odd relic from the past, provide insight into her restlessness and desire. Added to the context of life and death, it seems absurdly real and mundane at times, yet relevant. What are life’s important moments? Where are we going? These are just two questions that get explored with a gentle touch.
Written by American Clare Barron and performed in a Washington State accent, You Got Older brings a fresh take on timeless questions – with a touch of raunch and abandon. A gentle but enthusiastic bravo from me, especially to Emily and Francis – great casting!
