Timed to coincide with Suicide Prevention Month, St Kilda local author-illustrator Ryan Abramowitz is releasing his debut picture book, Elegy for an Elephant.
The story is inspired by his family’s journey to process, repair and heal from the loss of their father to suicide.
The exhibition will display the creative process that underscored the making of the picture book through drawings, paintings and filmic works. The art is also offered as a beacon of hope and warm hug for those navigating grief of all types.
At its heart, this story honours ways we connect with loved ones we have lost and the timeless nature of love.

Musical triangle mooted by Council

The St Kilda Triangle is set for another round of discussion, debate and dreaming as Council considers it’s own proposal to use part of the carpark for a 5000 capacity music venue.
But so far this triangle only has one side, our Council.
The other two vital sides, the State Government and Investors are yet to be invited or convinced.
Music, parking and open space
Last week, armed with some artists impressions, Council presented their ideas at an invitation only gig at The Prince.
This week Councillors will discuss the plans which were drawn up by Council for about $500K.
If approved, the next step is community engagement.
In a homage to the entertainment history of the site, the indicative design includes:
Space for 5000 standing capacity with a mezzanine or balcony carrying 1000 of this capacity.
Additional multi-purpose/additional venue space for 350 capacity, and other activation uses (bars/café and possible rehearsal spaces).
An area of lawn or a park, terraced steps to the level of the lawn creating an amphitheatre and opportunities for outdoor performances and events, possibilities for a pavilion for public use, and native landscape zones
200 car parks located under the venue, 8: 40 additional at grade car parks behind the Palais Theatre.
State Government ‘buy in’ crucial
In classic under statement, the Council media release concludes with this:
Given the civic nature and the scale of a potential new live music/performance venue on Crown Land, progressing the project from an idea to implementation would rely heavily on strong engagement and buy in from the Victorian Government.

PS for PS Media: Post script for Paradigm Shift

PS Media has launched a do or die appeal to the local community to save their local news initiative.
Funded by philanthropic sources, last year PS Media launched three trial local online ‘newspapers’.
All of the trials ceased to publish earlier this year.
Last week the backers of PS Media convened a trio of community events in St Kilda. They held a workshop with ‘community leaders’, a feedback and funding appeal to previous supporters and a public panel discussion with local MP Josh Burns and Mayor Heather Cunsolo.
Central to their pitch was recruiting 1000 local ‘co-owners’ to contribute $125 per year for four years to employ a journalist to write local news.
PS Media advocates believe that sufficient local people are prepared to pay for quality local news content and their co-ownership model could create a network of local outlets that could fill the vacuum left by the closure of hundreds of local newspapers.
Panel discussion was well attended
The evening panel discussion was well attended with about 80 locals, mostly from St Kilda in attendance. The panel session chaired by prominent backer and journalist Margaret Simons ranged positively over the need for reliable local news.
However, things got a little frosty when Mayor Cunsolo spoke about local advocacy groups RoPP and Progressive Port Phillip.
The Mayor suggested that RoPP’s online magazine Port Phillip Matters was a counterpoint to the perception that PS Media leaned toward the Progressive cause.
Simons and PPP advocates took umbrage and strenuously denied any alignment or bias. Simons said PS Media had a rigorous charter of independence.
But the appeal of PS Media to ‘progressives’ in the community was clear when a show of hands revealed that only one RoPP member (a councillor) was in the room.
