Loud Mouth and Veludo operators
have positive vision for Acland revival
Loud Mouth and Veludo operators Following our reports on the Liquor Licence hearings for Loud Mouth, the new operators contacted TWiSK to present their plans for that venue and Veludo in Acland Street.
Adam Wison told TWiSK that he and Ashley have recently become co owners of Veludo and part owners of Loud Mouth with the majority shareholder of Loud Mouth, Mickey Taffe.
Both Adam and Ashley have been living in St Kilda for the past decade and been heavily involved the hospitality scene during that time, working at numerous local venues.
Most recently Ashley has been connected with Shabby in Fitzroy Street and Adam with YHA in a management position.
“After the pandemic and the demise of Acland Street, we were keen to get involved and help get the area back on its feet,” Adam said.
“We plan to open Loud Mouth on grand Final weekend as a live music venue, which is what we felt the area needed now it has become Victoria’s first ever live music precinct.
“Veludo will be renovated, rebranded and relaunched, taking the venue in a different direction with the hope of driving more people to Acland Street, the plaza in particular.
“The addition of our outdoor seating at both venues will bring some atmosphere back to the area and negate any anti-social behaviour in the area.
“Our aim is to bring live music to the masses by offering free access to all parts of the venue on Friday and Saturdays. With the potential for ticketed events upstairs only on weekdays and Sundays.
“We’re really excited to see what the summer brings for both venues, Acland Street and the plaza. We believe with the right push we can begin to get Acland Street back to being it’s great former self and we look forward to welcoming all local residents to both venues.”
VCAT spat over RMYS design drags on until December
12 months after proposing designs for a redevelopment of the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) adjacent to St Kilda Pier, the matter was heard in VCAT last week only to be delayed for further hearings in December.
As reported last September in TWiSK (see below), elements of the design upset local architect and former Port Phillip Councillor David Brand. It’s found it’s way to VCAT with Brand and a group of locals challenging the permit granted by Council.
RMYS was granted a provisional permit for the upgrades by the City of Port Phillip and given the go-ahead from Heritage Victoria.

RMYS sails into controversy
[September 2022] Redevelopment plans for the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron building near St Kilda Pier have sailed into a storm of controversy.
Local architect and former councillor, David Brand told TWiSK that RMYS HQ is one of our City’s most prominent heritage buildings. “Yet some of the most basic principles of heritage conservation seem to have been forgotten,” he said.
Meanwhile the RMYS is adamant that their plans are right for the club, the amenity and the heritage values.
RMYS General Manager Matt Solly told TWiSK that the plans were a much needed update to a 95 year old building. ‘We’re trying to create a family friendly space, with better access and more modern facilities,” he said.
In their application, the RMYS said a refresh for this iconic St Kilda building was long overdue, and the Yacht Club have used the opportunity to explore how the internal layout could better suit the club’s operations.
They say the club wants to expand its membership to a more family-orientated demographic.
“This is a Yacht Club not a night club,” he said.
But David Brand is sceptical about the values of the plans. “The applicants seem to have little idea of what’s charming, important or valuable about its own building. It’s architectural character and its cultural identity are in real danger of being jettisoned.
“It’s a sad situation, and the club needs to act to save itself – by withdrawing and reviewing its proposal,” he concludes.
With major works on the pier and previous upgrades to the Stokehouse and Lifesaving Club, the RMYS is definitely in line for an upgrade.
But as its located on Crown Land, locals are forthright in their desire to influence the design.
At stake here is a design that speaks to the location and values the marine / sailing / water front connections of the location.
What would Carlo Catani have wanted?
