Hoopla about basketball hoop

TWiSK received this submission from Aziz who is unhappy about a Council decision to proceed with a new quarter basketball court at the J Talbot Reserve (adjacent to National Theatre).
“I have lived and worked close to the J Talbot Reserve for twenty years. It is a beautiful peaceful little park. It is a spot of solace for its users to find peace with nature, for workers to find a tranquil place to eat their lunch during their break, for dog owners to walk their best friends, for neighbours to catch up and have a chat, and for mums to let their toddlers try out their first steps. A basketball court in the middle of that park goes against everything that this beautiful peaceful little haven is about.”
Unanimous decision of council
The Council HaveYourSay website has the information about the proposal and consultation to relocate the existing basketball hoop.
You can see the report of the consultation, images and plans.
In short, the plans move the existing basketball hoop by about 50 metres to another location in the reserve.
In July, after considering the consultation feedback, councillors voted unanimously to proceed with installing the small court at the new location.
Construction is anticipated next year.Fun and serenity at the Jim Duggan Reserve
TWiSK has observed a similar but older style court in operation at the reserve next to the Betty Day Centre in Bath Street.
This small reserve is a haven for dog walkers, kids kicking footballs, people lying in the sun reading and families using the playground and BBQ. Often, but not always, there are people shooting hoops and having a good time.
Bless ‘em, and all the others sharing the space.
Can serenity and fun mix? What do you think.
