Loud Mouth: Lucky to get a liquor licence?
Strict conditions apply

Loudmouth, the latest incarnation of the night club on the corner of Acland and Barkly previously known as Big Mouth, was set to open on 1 September but was delayed until later this month.
There could be many reasons for this delay, including some hair-raising evidence at the Victorian Liquor Commission earlier this year.
The Commission’s 18 July decision to grant the venue a licence with strict conditions reads like a court room scene in a trashy paperback novel.
A plot with the lot
The Commission decision documents a ‘colorful’ history in the local bar business, including:
Licence troubles at previous venues including Sunset Bar, Tongue & Groove Nightclub, White Bar, Vodka Temple and Veludo.
Key people found to be unsuitable to hold a liquor licence as recently as 2021.
False and misleading statements to the Commission, squirming lawyers and a revolving door of ownership and key personnel.
But suitable non-the-less
The Commission decision is extraordinary reading leading to this extraordinary conclusion …..
“The material before the Commission demonstrates that [applicant] has a history of non-compliance with the LCR Act.
“The Commission notes that most of the incidents occurred many years ago and the Commission is persuaded that [the applicant] has learnt from his past mistakes and has put in place harm minimisation measures in his venues.
“He has engaged an expert for initial and ongoing assistance in this regard.”
Despite receiving infringement notices at Veludo in January 2023, “the Commission is satisfied that [the applicant] is currently suitable to hold a licence.”
Read the decision in full
It’s worth a read – your eyes may pop – read it now
The applicant is on notice to be on their best behaviour lest Loud Mouth will quickly be Closed Mouth.
Management of the venue was approached for comment.
Here are details of their planned opening night, Grand Final Holiday Eve …
