Tix and info Tram services fail Disability Access deadline

Transport topic by TWiSK
Melbourne’s trams are set to be in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act.
The Government’s own Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) requires that all tram stops must be fully compliant with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT) by 31 December 2022 and all trams must be DSAPT compliant by 31 December 2032.
A 2020 report by Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO) concluded that the government had no plan to meet these deadlines.
The government responded by ordering 100 new G class trams for $1.85B – but the first of these will roll out from 2025 (source)
Local trams and infrastructure fails except for Route 96
In St Kilda, this means that many tram stops remain inaccessible and many trams servicing St Kilda are inaccessible. While route 96 is a positive story with both low floor trams and many level access stops, other routes are shamefully below par.
Other local routes fail big time
Route 16 (Melb Uni – Kew)
Only about a third of trams are low floor and level access stops are rare after Luna Park with only one further stop at Balaclava Station and another in Armadale.
Route 12 (Victoria Gardens to St Kilda)
Has some level access stops by no low floor trams.
Route 67 / 3A (Melbourne University to Carnegie to Carnegie)
Has some level access stops along St Kilda Road but no low floor trams.
TWiSK questions for the transport forum
What is the timetable for constructing more level access stops for tram routes 16, 12, 67 and 3a?
When will low floor trams start operating on Routes 12, 67 and 3a?
What should be the consequences of failing to meet the DDA deadlines in 2022 and 2032?

St Kilda’s only independent election coverage

This week we start news coverage of the November 26 State election.
TWiSK will be following the issues in the four local seats that include St Kilda and Elwood:
Albert Park
Click for boundary map
With Martin Foley stepping down, Albert Park is being targeted by Greens. MLC Nina Taylor is making a bid for this seat for Labor. But as we see below, her opponents are slow at coming forward.
Prahran
Click for boundary map
Greens MLA Sam Hibbins will be going all out for a third term up against the ALP’s Wesa Chau, a self described D & I Expert, Entrepreneur and Social Innovator.
If you live North of the St Kilda Town Hall, you are probably in Prahran.
Caulfield
Click for boundary map
Liberal MLA David Southwick won by just 204 votes in 2018. His is the most marginal Liberal seat.
If you live East of Brighton Road or Chapel Street, you are probably in Caulfield.
Brighton
Click for boundary map
Liberal James Newbury defied the 2018 Danslide swing by just under 900 votes. Port Phillip Cr Louise Crawford is the ALP candidate.
If you live East of Dickens Street, you are probably in Brighton.
Set the agenda
Readers are invited to set the agenda for the TWiSK coverage.
Send us 30 words on your top three issues and we will share them all.
No anonymous contributions and no personal attacks on candidates will be published.
Email TWiSK nowBlue, green and teal ‘missing’ candidates
With just over 100 days until the 26 November State election, both the Greens and Liberal parties are yet to announce candidates for the local seat of Albert Park.
With long standing Albert Park MP Martin Foley not contesting, the ALP are putting forward current MLA Nina Taylor (pictured). Their Albert Park campaign will be launched on Thursday 25 August by Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan (tix and info).
Local Liberals have told TWiSK that their candidate will be finalised at a vote on Tuesday 30 August.
Both Cr Pearl and Bond have told TWiSK they would not be candidates.
Teals are on the hunt for candidates
Teal insiders are currently vetting possible candidates for state areas included in the Teal swing areas – but early reports suggest a candidate in Albert Park is unlikely.
Greens have only selected a handful of candidates so far
Meanwhile the Greens are talking up their chances of taking Albert Park and a swag of other seats. Leader Samantha Ratnam has been quoted saying “[Greens] have good prospects of picking up seats like Richmond, Northcote, Albert Park, and even traditionally safe Liberal seats like Hawthorn, Caulfield and Brighton are in play for us at this election.”
TWiSK finds it surprising that candidates had not yet been finalised for Albert Park, Hawthorn, Caulfield or Brighton.
See the Greens online list of candidates.
Last week the Greens announced their upper house candidates, including current Port Phillip Councillor Katherine Copsey in Southern Metropolitan Region.
The official deadline for nominations is Thursday 10 November
