Local emerging artist program gives musos a kickstart
Council has got behind a great initiative that puts emerging musical acts in front of large audiences by funding support acts.
‘Garage 2 Gig’ fosters emerging talent in and around the St Kilda Live Music Precinct.
At least a dozen emerging artists from across the music spectrum not only get to play in front of large audiences at our best and most prestigious venues but also benefit from the free promotion that accompanies their performance.
Thus far emerging and independent acts Rosario De Marco, Kaiyah Mercedes with Seetali Mack, Miss Lizzy and the Night Owls, Mareya and Younique and JHM have all participated in the program as will Hanky Panky Social Club in support of 80s cult act Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs.
Participating venues thus far include the Palais Theatre, Memo Music Hall, Loudmouth Bar and Newmarket Hotel.
Producer/curator Craig Reardon says the results have often exceeded expectations.
“Participating acts have been thrilled with the results of their performances. Apart from playing large audiences in prestigious venues, participants like Kaiyah Mercedes got to meet and chat with the headline acts, in her case established stars Leo Sayer and Joe Camilleri.”

Big changes proposed for Council aged care services

About 650 current clients of Council provided aged care in-home help will need to find new service providers if proposed changes are approved by Council in February next year.
Prompted by Federal Government changes to aged care funding that take effect from July next year, Council has determined that its “no longer possible” to provide in-home services such as cleaning assistance, assistance with personal care and showering, individual shopping assistance, respite care, property maintenance and home modifications.
Council will continue to provide community-based services such as meals, transport, social connection programs and our hop-on-hop-off bus program.
Council will establish a new community connector service that will assist people to find new service providers.
Final decision in February 2024
Council will consider community feedback before making a decision next year ahead of the July rule changes.
If the proposal is accepted, Port Phillip will join a long list of councils that have exited in-home help services.
According to media reports, older residents have faced difficulties finding new service providers as skilled labour shortages plague the new service suppliers.
Unions representing existing staff have also expressed concerns about lower rates of pay for the same work with new service providers.
But we’ve been here before
Some years ago, Council opted not to provide NDIS funded services and abandoned a range of programs supporting disabled in the community.
Inevitably, the services follow the money, but there is no guarantee of value or quality in the brave new world of market provided support.
There’s merit in choosing your own provider, but with labour shortages it could mean no service rather than choice of service.
Not fun if you need help to shower or get out of bed.

Cr Heather Cunsolo returned as Port Phillip Mayor
Cr Cunsolo’s bid for a second term was successful as she was re-elected un-opposed at a Special Council meeting last week.
She will be assisted by Cr Louise Crawford as Deputy Mayor, who was also elected unopposed.
Both will serve for 12 month until the Council elections next year in October.
TWiSK says congratulations to both women and we will present an interview with the Mayor in coming weeks.
Local Government Minister sits on ward change announcement
All wards will be single councillor wards from the next election.
Ward boundaries for the next council election are set to fundamentally change as the government imposes new rules requiring single councillor wards for all Councils.
In all 39 Councils are getting new ward boundaries though an independent review being completed in three sets – with the last set to completed in January next year.
TWiSK sought an ETA from Minister Horne’s office without success. Its probable that the Minister will sign off and release all the reviews together in the new year. Don’t hold your breath.
