Fitzroy Street: Dancing or sleeping or both?

Plans to replace the derelict Poison night club on with an upmarket residential development raise existential questions about the future of Fitzroy Street as an entertainment precinct.
Details of plans for 61-73 Fitzroy Street reveal a 5-level residential development replacing the nightclub and short-stay accommodation.
The developers are proposing a 5-storey mixed use development (39 apartments, 897 m2 retail space, 100 basement car spaces) and reduction in car parking requirements (for the retail only). Realestatesource.com.au has reported that Sydney developer Fortis will invest $25m on the project with upmarket elements including 7 three-bedroom penthouses, with occupant only facilities like business lounge, boardroom, cinema, golf simulator and dog washing facilities.
Pro-entertainment objections lodged
Local resident and DJ Brad Avery has lodged an objection to the plan. He is concerned that entertainment venues are being replaced by residential developments.
‘Entertainment is not a negative amenity, done well it’s a positive amenity,’ he told TWiSK.
Action Group being formed
Brad told TWiSK that residents and traders in  Acland and Fitzroy Streets areas would soon call a meeting to establish an action group.
TWiSK will provide details when they are available.
