Heather Cunsolo Mayor, Andrew Bond Deputy

Gateway ward councillor Cr Heather Cunsolo is the new City of Port Phillip Mayor.
She and her Deputy Mayor Cr Andrew Bond were elected by councillors last Wednesday.
Cr Bond’s decade as a Port Phillip councillor was recognised at the mayoral election meeting.
He is the only councillor to have won three successive four-year terms on this council.
Cr Baxter’s angry Facebook post
Out going Deputy Mayor Tim Baxter launched an unsuccessful bid for the mayoralty with an angry Facebook post just days before the vote.
“There’s a lot of speculation going around [about the mayoral election], but I can tell you now that it’s a foregone conclusion.
“I will run for Mayor on Wednesday, and I will lose.
“The conservatives have had a majority on this council since last year when Cr Cunsolo joined them to vote Cr Pearl into the mayoralty. They will again exercise that power to install Cr Cunsolo as mayor, and put either Cr Bond or Cr Pearl in as deputy.
“The conservatives have decided to give up any illusion of working with the whole council. By installing Cr Cunsolo and Cr Bond (or perhaps Pearl) they will take a sweep of both top positions. They are no longer content to rule, they wish to reign.”

Liberals promise mobile police station for Fitzroy Street

Monday 7 November: Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, David Southwick MLA joined candidate Lauren Sherson to pledge $1.5 million to place a Mobile Police Station in Fitzroy Street. (Pictured above with Fitzroy Street Traders President David Blakeley)
Southwick said, “a Mobile Police Station for St Kilda will become an integral part of the community, decrease incident response times, play an important part in reducing crime, and increase community protection.”
Liberal Candidate for Albert Park, Lauren Sherson, said Albert Park residents and local Police deserve better. “Fitzroy Street was always a thriving and iconic entertainment precinct. That’s why we need to help locals attract visitors and families back to the area.”

Two hours with candidates in the spotlight

Four women candidates for the State seat of Albert Park faced up to a highly engaged local audience at the Memo Music Hall on last Wednesday.
The candidates were Liberals Lauren Sherson, Labor Nina Taylor MLC, Greens Kim Samiotis and independent Georgie Dragwidge.
TWiSK applauds the candidates for their participation, courage and candour. We present a video record for you to make up your own conclusions after hearing directly from the speakers.

Debate headlines by TWiSK

Labor emphasises its record, but light on announcements
Not surprisingly, Nina Taylor (sitting MP in the upper house), was keen to present her Government’s many local achievements. It’s part of her style to present lengthy lists of Government projects and spending with enthusiasm.
But in question time, Taylor was less confident with her answers to questions about South Melbourne Town Hall, bike lanes and Albert Park.
Liberals make targeted pledges
In the absence of a record in government, the Liberals have made pledges on the South Melbourne Town Hall, Albert Park Lake and the Mobile Police Station for Fitzroy Street. With Sherson, they pitch a kind of ‘Liberal lite’, with more emphasis on children’s welfare, local entrepreneurship and post pandemic recovery.
Greens offer a ‘conscience’ vote
Kim Samiotis was the last of the candidates to join the election race. Notwithstanding that, Samiotis was well prepared for the questions. She had a pledge on the South Melbourne Town Hall and the Albert Park Lake.
Independent has market connection
Georgie Dragwidge was also a confident speaker with a grasp of the local issues despite living outside the electorate in South Kingsville.
Her kids attend school in the area and her special topic was Schools.
