Mayor defends budget
Rates up, new waste charges and FOGO rollout

TWiSK talks to Marcus (13 minutes) listen now
With at least two Councillors committed to freezing rates, the next budget of Council was set for controversy.
The pressure is on all Councils, with rising costs (like those faced by the community) while being limited to 1.75% rate increase by a State imposed cap.
At the same time, there is pressure to introduce FOGO and four-bin recycling sooner rather than later. There is also a significant list of major capital projects that must be done within the decade.
Predictably it was going to end in tears.
After a lengthy debate the council approved a budget with the following headlines …
1.75 per cent rate increase
This is determined by the rates cap set by the Victorian Government.
New Food Organic Garden Organic (FOGO) and separate glass recycling
This will reduce waste to landfill and increase the quality of recycled waste
A new $176.20 Waste Charge
Plus a $88.10 FOGO collection charge for eligible household
There is concern that these charges are outside the cap and could rise in future years.
An addition $1m in economic recovery package
including outdoor activation and footpath trading permit relief.

Vale Perce White – 6 times Mayor of Port Melbourne
Last week, flags on the local town halls were lowered to half mast to acknowledge the dedicated service to our community by Percy (Perce) White who died on 1 June aged 89.
More info about Perce’s life of service
21/22 budget $5m + surplus
Interestingly, council reported a $5 surplus over the past financial year. Before you break out the champagne, the savings came mostly from deferring projects dues to COVID and a decrease in staff costs.
