The Pride of Fitzroy Street
Fitzroy Street is to get a $38 million Pride Centre styled on a similar concept in San Francisco. Located on the former Monroe’s site 79-81 Fitzroy Street, the LGTBIQ hub could house a range of community organisations like JOY FM, Victorian AIDS Council, Midsumma, Switchboard and -18. It could also have an important national gay and lesbian archive.
At the announcement last Friday, the State Government pledged $15 million for the centre, and the Council promised to pitch in $13 million (for the site). Works will begin within the next twelve months.
Victorian Pride Centre Board Chair Jude Munro AO, herself a former CEO of St Kilda Council, was pleased as punch. “We will own this site in perpetuity – and march by it every Pride March knowing it is ours,” she said.
