Childcare sell-off now the last option

A ‘last-minute’ motion by Crs Crawford and Baxter to halt the sale of the childcare centres failed to pass in an emotive two-hour debate at last weeks Council meeting. But just minutes later, all but two councillors supported a very similar motion by Crs Martin and Baxter that reassured parents about the process while keeping the sale as a last option.

New process welcomed by parents
But while the meeting procedure was arduous, at times confusing and emotional, the result was welcomed by the childcare centres.
In a joint statement, Caroline Thornton, President of Eildon Road Childcare & Kindergarten said the successful motion was a significant win for the three centres.
“While Cr Crawford and Cr Baxter’s original motion to halt the sale process was unsuccessful, [the second successful motion] has provided the centres, their employees and the families that rely on these services a glimmer of hope that Council will finally start to rigorously explore all viable options, instead of ploughing ahead with the sale process.”

Time for support to translate into pledges
The clear commitment to more options than sale paves the way for a wider variety of solutions.
The vocal community campaign has secured significant interest and support from local politicians.
Josh Burns MHR for Macnamara, has a No Childcare Sale poster on his office window.
State MLA Martin Foley has also used Instagram to show his support of the centres.
While Liberal David Southwick, MLA for Caulfield (which includes parts of St Kilda), attended the rally at Town Hall.
With federal election promises looming, it’s an ideal time for support to turn into pledges.
TWiSK invites comment
Hey politicians, while we’ve got your attention
Councils cannot fund childcare and early childhood services without support from government.
Council and their community need a genuine partnership with state and federal governments to meet early childhood needs.
We’ll look forward to hearing from the candidates for Macnamara about how their government might join that partnership.
There’s a 150 words in the next TWiSK for Macnamara candidates (pictured above) to have their say
